The culture of the vine in the area goes up at the time of the
construction of the abbey of Bourgueil.
The cultivated type of vine is the called frank cabernet "Breton".
It was introduced into the area in 1152 by the Baudry abbot at the
time of the union of Anjou and Aquitaine.
Controlled label of origin (A.O.C.) since 1937, St Nicolas de Bourgueil
extends on a surface from 950 hectares.
The southern full exposed vineyard, produces on average 50000 hectolitres
per annum.
On St Nicolas, one distinguishes three types of wine:
- gravels
- sands
- the tuffs (argilo-limestone)
